July 11th

It’s been about 10 days since I had to get my motorcycle towed to a shop back in Montrose, Colorado. I am now in Erie, CO, waiting to get it to a Moto Morini dealership, with a solution that is supposed to solidly fix the problem: an improved fuel line.

Here’s a recap of what i did in the meantime. First I rented a car…

Forest fires to the west of Montrose, even as far as Utah, we’re causing a lot of smoke filled air.
Drove (rental car) up to Grand Mesa. Huge area that is raised above 10,000 ft with lakes and forest. It was here that I saw the first bald eagle I’ve ever seen in Colorado.
There’s the eagle!
July 4th parade in Montrose CO. Disappointed there were no cowboys or even horses. 😦
Went down the Unaweep Tabeguache Scenic Byway (HW141)
I took an awesome dirt road short cut to get out of the Canyon.

Drove back to Mancos to hang with my cousins again….

On the way I saw the forest fire by Ouray.
Saw more beautiful mountains.
And caught a Rainbow trout!
Staying with Janet & Jeff in Mancos again, and visited Mesa Verde.
That whole giant mesa area was its own civilization.
Got news from the motorcycle shop in Montrose that my bike was running again 🙂
On the way back to Montrose, Jeff & Janet followed me to Telluride for a quick tour.
We rode up the mountain on the gondola, very fun and scenic. It’s no wonder celebrities and the richie rich like to buy property here.

Picked up my bike in Montrose knowing I had to get it to the dealership in Denver to install a new fuel line so it would run consistently. I also picked up a jump start battery at Harbor Freight just in case.
Stupidly confident my bike was working again, I continued my trip as planned by staying at a campground (Bogan Flats), 10 miles up the same road from where it originally stopped running.
Surprise… next morning it didn’t start again. I waited all day, and tried to start it several times, and it didn’t.
Took this picture of the sunset that night and then tried to start the bike one last time before I called it a night… and it started. Whew.

I left it running while I packed up, loaded the bike, and left to Denver. It was about 8:30 pm, I went over Vail pass about midnight, the Eisenhower tunnel an hour later and got to Erie CO at 2 am with two stops for gas, and i never turned off the engine, I used the spare key to open the gas tank.

Thanks Charlie and Lisa for taking me in on such short notice!

The bike luckily started the next day and I drove it to the dealership for fixing.
